Asia University (AU) was founded by Dr. Chang-Hai Tsai and Mr. Tseng-lien Lin, and was promoted and renamed from Taichung Healthcare and Management University on August 1, 2005. The university includes 8 colleges (Medical and Health Science, Nursing, Information and Electrical Engineering, Management, Humanities and Social Sciences, Creative Design, International, and Artificial Intelligence) and 29 departments.

In the past 20 years, AU has demonstrated excellence in academic performance, and was ranked as the first in many higher education evaluations conducted by the Ministry of Education (MOE). It was not only evaluated as the best among newly-established universities in Taiwan, but also granted honored projects from the MOE, the so-called Program for Promoting Teaching Excellence Universities, for 12 years consecutively. Meanwhile, AU has earned international reputation by several world university rankings, including Times Higher Education World University Rankings, Academic Ranking of World Universities, US News & World Report Global University Ranking, and QS Global University Rankings. Based on the Times Higher Education, Asia University was 99th of the 100 best universities in the world younger than 50 years.

To improve the quantity and quality of research outputs, Asia University has established various top-notch research centers that will lead the world by adopting emerging technology. Our research centers include the AI Research Center, the Center for Precision Medicine Research, the Intelligent Assistive Technology and Rehabilitation Innovation Center, the Institute of Innovation and Circular Economy, the Eye Center, the Big Data Research Center, the Research Center of Fintech and Blockchain Technology, the Food Safety and Inspection Center, the 3D Printing Medical Research Institute, the Center for Prevention and Treatment of Internet Addiction, and the Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms Research Center. Furthermore, in response to the age of AI and to enhance students’ AI literacy, Asia University has established the first College of Artificial Intelligence in Taiwan to boost students’ future career prospect with AI knowledge. Our AI experience room situated inside the Smart Library offers students a glance of smart medical service, smart home, self-driving car, unmanned factory, etc.

The purpose of library establishments in universities is to help achieve education goals. Libraries provide abundant resources and services to assist students in gaining knowledge and conducting independent studies. According to research [1], students receiving higher academic scores on required and elective courses tend to make better use of library resources and enter libraries more often than their peers. Besides, for those who have experience using library resources, chances are high that they will keep visiting.

The data set of this topic includes students’ personal academic records, score rankings and library record (borrowing, entering and leaving times) of 2011-2018 academic year in Asia University to predict the progression of personal academic rankings (compared to 1st semester) in 2nd semester of 2018. We are looking forward to seeing participants identifying the relationships between library Resources utilization and learning Effectiveness.

Evaluation Criteria

Evaluations are conducted by calculating the Mean Absolute Error(MAE)[2].

The formula is as follows:

$$MAE = {\sum_{i=1}^{n} \left| (y_i - \hat{y}_i) \right| \over n} $$

[2] Mean Absolute Error (MAE):

  • The evaluation will be based on the final uploaded result. If multiple participants get the same evaluation scores, the time of uploading will determine the ranking.
  • There’s no limitation on the number of uploading.
This topic does not offer a team-up option, only one account per person is allowed, and each person can only participate once. If any violations are found, people who are involved would be forced to withdraw the activity.
When using external data sets, participants should avoid using future data as the basis of the prediction results, and must state source of data sets in the forum for references.
  • All the data, techniques and source codes are original work of participants or are used by permission complying with laws and regulations. If any third-party claims their intellectual property rights or other rights and interests are being violated, the participant will need to handle the disputes personally. If any participants violate intellectual property rights, they will be disqualified, and shall bear legal responsibilities.

  • If there is cheating or fraud during the activity, the participant that cheats will be disqualified from the activity and the vacancy would be filled up by other participants in the ranking order.
  • After uploading, the answers of test data would be divided into two parts to calculate the score:
    • Before the deadline of the activity: The system refers to only a part of the test data to examine and calculate the score. The result will be posted on Public Leaderboard as reference for the final score and ranking. This data accounts for 40% of the entire test data.
    • After the deadline of the activity: The system refers to the remaining test data (60%) to examine and calculate the score. The result will be posted on Private Leaderboard as reference for the final score and ranking.
  • Should there be disputes, the organizers reserve the right to the final decision.
